When I Was Young When I was young I could do what I pleased When I was young Bring the world to its knees When I was young I just didn’t care Sometimes I wonder where the time has gone Sometimes I wonder why it turned out wrong Sometimes I wonder when the fire burnt out Sometimes I wonder why my life’s full of doubt When I was young I knew what I wanted When I was young I went on undaunted When I was young Nothing got in my way [Guitar Solo] When I was young Remember the days Of self-conscious youth When we all had something Something to prove Time takes its toll Anger gives way to joy As the better man Replaces the boy When I was young I could do what I liked When I was young I knew I was right When I was young I just didn’t care When I was young I just grew my hair When I was young Nothing got in my way When I was young A week lasted a day When I was young I needed respect When I was young I was a pain in the neck!

Gone 03:12
Gone Time grinds you down Screws you into the ground Don't make a sound You’re gone So gone Gone so Gone Don’t even turn around As I watch you walk away There’s nothing left to say And you’re gone So gone Gone So gone I thought I saw you today But I just could not explain This feeling of pain Now you’re gone So gone Gone So gone I can’t even get away From the power of yesterday No reason to stay We were wrong So wrong Wrong So wrong

That Is The Way It Is Why should we tolerate the things we hate? Why don’t we make the rules, not take the rules? What is this anxiety in our society? Why do the ones with none, all want some? Cos that’s the way it is, the way it is Don’t bother changing things, it’s all too late Cos that’s the way it is, the way it is Just get in line and take your fate Cos that’s the way it is, the way it is Why do we toe the line just to fit in? Why do we judge a man by his skin? Why do we value those who have the most? Why do we take the bait every day? Cos that’s the way it is, the way it is Don’t bother changing things, it’s all too late Cos that’s the way it is, the way it is Just get in line and take your fate Cos that’s the way it is, the way it is Why do we stand in line and pretend were fine? Why do we face the pain with a smile? Why do we idolise the selfish swine? Because we’re used to it all the time? Cos that’s the way it is, the way it is Don’t bother changing things, it’s all too late Cos that’s the way it is, the way it is Just get in line and take your fate

London Boy 02:56
1.2.3.4 To be a London Boy Fills my heat with so much joy Walking through old London town Without a sad old frown You can come too All the thing we can do We’ll have a jolly good time Everything will be fine So don’t miss out Join us - the London crowd Think of all the fun we’ll have It will be quite mad To be a London Boy Fills my heart with so much joy Walking through old London Town Without a sad old frown You can come too All the things we’ll do We’ll have a jolly good time Everything will be fine So don’t miss out Join us - The London Crowd Think of all the fun we’ll have It will be quite mad

1999 04:55
1999 I thought the future would arrive In 1999 But my dreams never came on time In 1999 Perhaps we’ll live on the moon Or find another cancer cure Discover why were here Live in a world without any fear I thought the future would arrive In 1999 But my dreams never came on time In 1999 Robots would do our chores Computers rectify our flaws Another war with mars Solar-powered flying cars I thought the future would arrive In 1999 But my dreams never came on time In 1999 We might travel in time Or wipe out violent crime The weather under our control Create some new rock ’n’ roll I thought the future would arrive In 1999 But my dreams never came on time In 1999 Find a final solution For increasing pollution No worry if you die In the future you’ll be revived The future did not arrive In 1999 Where are my dreams In 1999 Computers that cant count To the year 2000 The system out of the control People gave up their soul I can’t believe that this is the future I can’t believe that this is the future I can’t believe that this is the future I can’t believe that this is the future Is this the future?

Now 02:17
Now Some things left unspoken But I know I can tell you All I want Time slips away At the turn of the page NOW Look out of the window All the seasons See them fall Faces comes Faces go But… NOW The evening shadow Makes the night Appear so Dark and cold Night’s they come Days they go NOW So what do you know You had it once But then it goes Everything’s here In its place For NOW Trapped in this moment A fragile life A fading memory Time will destroy All we see NOW The journey goes on But some don’t know Which road they’re on What does it mean Is this all a dream But not NOW

You’re Going Down So hard to find the people that you trust Don’t want to communicate though you know you must Put your faith in friends you though you had But what can you do when everything turns bad? You’re going down You’re going down You’re going down You’re going down And I will make sure You never get up again It’s a game of give and take we play You give, they take End of the story When it all breaks down there nothing you can do Look them in the eye and tell them you’re no fool You’re going down You’re going down You’re going down You’re going down And I will make sure You never get up again I’m going to hit out And I don’t care who I hit You think I’m stupid But I’m not full of shit I want to hurt you The way that you hurt me Can’t let you get away With this whole travesty You’re going down You’re going down You’re going down You’re going down And I will make sure You never get up again When the blood slows down And there’s some clarity Ask yourself why and question humanity I don’t deal in lies I only deal in truth But the truth hurts So I can only lose You’re going down You’re going down You’re going down You’re going down And I will make sure You never get up again

The Damage Done We walk a fine line between love and hate The ones we love are the ones we hate Got to learn to appreciate, not castigate or humiliate Think of all the damage done When you were young When you were young Think of all the damage done Can’t be undone Can’t be undone Think of all the damage done When you were young When you were young We walk a fine line between love and hate The ones we love are the ones we hate Got to learn to appreciate, not castigate or humiliate Think of all the damage done When you were young When you were young Think of all the damage done Can’t be undone Can’t be undone Think of all the damage done When you were young When you were young Can’t be undone Can’t be undone Think of all the damage done When you were young When you were young Think

Save Me 05:50
Waiting Waiting For you To help me Save me Save me From all the harm I can do to myself I feel so Lonely So Far From here It’s seems like My other life Was just A passing dream Thinking Thinking Of the time I waited Searching Searching For the shreds Of my humanity I feel so Lonely So far From home It feels like The hand of death Is creeping round My shoulder Wanting Wanting you Here by my side Doubting Doubting There was a time Before this moment Had arrived I feel so Wasted So Far from here But I know In my heart I might Never get back home

about

What is this all about?
The songs here are from a different time, pre-millennial, before the Internet had taken hold of our imaginations and thrust us into the post-cultural abyss we inhabit now. I was still learning how to play and record, so decidedly to go back to my roots and put down some singy-songs, rather than instrumentals. The songs here cover a range of different subjects.

The first song is a humourous take on the journey from youth into manhood, while “Gone” is my first attempt at writing about grief and the loss of my grandparents, detailing the strange phenomena of often mistakenly thinking you’ve seen that dead person in a crowd. “That Is The Way It Is” is all about the futility of the human condition and the social programming we’ve been forced into, while “London Boy” is just me trying to write a song to raise a smile.

Seeing as we were all suffering from PMT (pre-millennial tension) at the time, “1999” was about the dreams versus reality of being on the threshold of the next century where computers couldn’t even count to two thousand. Meanwhile, we get existential with the song “Now”, which was based on an existing instrumental, to ponder the intangible moment that passes so quickly before us.

Whereas “You’re Going Down” was written to subvert expectation with the listener thinking it was about thumping someone, it isn’t. The chorus is about being depressed at situation and being dragged down to the point of giving up. “The Damage Done” is about childhood trauma and the title track is about railing against one’s own self-destructive tendencies in a rather overblown and melodramatic style.

How it was Done
At this time, I’d moved away from using a 4-track cassette recorder and was recording music on the computer using some software called Quartz Audiomaster, which was a budget Digital Audio Workstation that was bundled with my fancy, expensive sound interface.

I was recording vocals with the same £20 Tandy microphone I’d used previously, which wasn’t particular ideal. In terms of instruments: this was recorded using my Fender HSS Black Fat Strat, a Yamaha RBX250 bass guitar and I think it was a Digitech RP10 doing all the guitar FX work.

For this edition, I have overhauled each song and added new material, new guitars, new voices in order to improve the overall production quality.
